Gastric adenocarcinoma is one of the leading causes of death in the world and in the Lara State it is the second leading cause of death from malignant neoplasms. Over the past few decades, molecular research has provided details of genetic and epigenetic abnormalities related to malignant transformation and progression in gastric cancer (GC). Recently, the association between variants of the 8q24 region and breast, prostate, stomach and colorectal cancer has been described. In this project we evaluated the association of single nucleotide polymorphism rs6983267 (G/T) of the 8q24 chromosome region with the risk of developing CG in individuals from the Center-West of the country. A case-control study was carried out using archival biopsies included in kerosene, 101 GC samples and as control 101 chronic gastritis samples (GCr). Previously there was confi rmation of the histopathological diagnosis. After DNA extraction from the samples, PCRRFLP polymorphism analysis was performed using HpyCH4IV restriction
enzyme. The most prevalent genotypes for GC and GCr were GG (39.6%) and GT (46.5%), respectively. In both groups of samples the G allele was predominant with 58.4% for GC and 61.9% for GCr. No signifi cant differences in genotypic and allelic frequencies were found between both groups.
