The past 15 years (1995-2009) witnessed an annual growth of literature on patent indicators. However, no research was conducted to examine patent indicators systematically and comprehensively. This paper reviewed the current literature and application
of patent indicators in Taiwan to provide references for futurereview, application and studies. Researchers first searched for articles using the keyword pool of experts; then the key literature was studied by content analysis, such as using statistics to compare the publications and the application of patent indicators in industries. The findings are as follows: 1) The ways in which patent indicators have been used are diverse and researchers generally combine multiple indicators for use. 2) The study on patent
indicators in Taiwan needs to be improved in terms of quantity. 3) There are seven major research teams dedicated to the study
of patent indicator patent usage and financial performance of industries. 4) Compared with private universities, state universities obtained 73 % of government support for patent indicator research. 5) Empirical studies on patent indicators in industries
are relevant to the government’s high-tech policy planning. 6) Bibliometrics is a valid method to study the literature on patent
indicators. By including more than one industrial evidence, it provides valuable references for future studies.
