Scientific controversy and breakdown of validation standards

Abstract

This essay analyzes the nature of scientific controversies, from their technical origins to their transformation into public scan dals. Using an approach based on the anthropology of science and the sociology of systems, the study proposes four "frequen cies" where dissent manifests itself: the intra-scientific sphere, disciplinary boundaries, social expertise, and value conflicts. The analysis argues that controversy arises when the standards of methodological validation break down, generating an "un decidability" that shifts logical debate toward moral reproach and the use of strategic skepticism. When internal arbitration mechanisms, such as reproducibility or peer review, fail, the system becomes "irritated," allowing science to be colonized by external logics of a political or media nature. In conclusion, the text reveals that the transition to scandal is not an incidental failure, but rather a consequence of the porous nature of so cial systems. Scientific truth thus becomes an object of conten tion within the "democracy of the credulous," where emotional narratives are often more competitive than expert rigor. It is concluded that strengthening scientific authority in the face of post-truth requires reinforcing institutional arbitration mecha nisms and recognizing that scientific consensus is a fragile pro cess that must protect its autonomy from social polarization.
